Covering racial issues in the news

February 15, 2009

This is an article that I found to be interesting. Being a staff writer and editor for Minority Today and president of NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) may have made if more relevant to me. The article, by Mallary Jean Tenore, discusses The Root, an online magazine created by the Washington Post that was meant to capture stories from Black perspectives on different issues. The post also discusses how the timing of President Obama’s election has helped the magazine, which recently celebrated its one year anniversary.

I think the story caught my attention because I believe that having different perspectives and diversity within the news is very important. The question that the Tenore posed at the beginning of the article also kept me reading: If not mainstream media, who is covering racial issues?
